Boat Ventilation

Nobody likes a smelly old boat. It is so much more pleasant to be inside a boat that looks, feels and smells clean and fresh. I have visited inside many boats that smelled musty or of diesel fuel but I wasn’t inclined to spend much time there. The owners of some of those boats visited on the boats that I have built and were surprised at how they did not have any unpleasant odours but were fresh and airy.

Outside view of a closed butterfly hatch. Either side can be opened individually or both can be opened together. Opening the windward side feeds good breeze into the boat when the wind blows. In windless conditions opening both sides works best.

Pathfinder – A serious Open Cruising Boat

Sea Urchin – Built by Rick Corless at his home on Gabriola Island, British Columbia is one of the nicer examles of the Pathfinder design. He's gone to a lot of trouble to make her look something very special, building during the off season from his job as a diver and harvester of the spiny delicacy that his pride and joy is named for.

 

I’d been getting very positive feedback on my 4.5m Navigator design, but there were a few who wanted a bit more space, plus the ability to venture further of a weekend. They still wanted the boat to fit in their carport, mainly as a building space but storage was also an issue, you can see that most suburban dwellers have limitations in that respect so that was a major consideration.
